Harinama
“Hari-nama” means “the name of the Lord”. Harinama is when devotees go out into the street and chant the holy names aloud for everyone: the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, to mridanga and karatalas.
In its present form the practice is more than five hundred years old. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu began it in Bengal, taking congregational chanting out of temples and homes onto the city streets so that anyone could hear the holy name, whatever their background or belief.
The idea is simple: the holy name acts by itself, and it is enough simply to hear it. Nobody is recruited and nothing is sold — people just sing. Anyone may join: sing, play, walk along, or just listen from the side.

On harinama only the Hare Krishna maha-mantra is sung. There are just three words, and anyone can join in:
