Kirtan
An hour of chanting the holy names together, to mridanga and karatalas. You need not know the words: the leader sings a line and the room repeats it.
You may sing, clap, dance, or simply sit and listen — all of it is equally welcome. The Sunday programme starts here, and this is its easiest part for a first-time visitor: neither a voice nor an ear for music is required — generations have tested this.
What is sung
The Hare Krishna maha-mantra is sung: the leader gives a line, everyone repeats it. The words are always the same:
Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare
Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare
